My Experience With The KeraStraight Treatment Process At Ulta Salons

What is it about hair anyway??? I'm pretty sure I have spent more time complaining and wishing my hair would transform itself into something spectacular than I have watching tv, or sleeping, or just about anything else. If you have curly hair, you desire straight. If it's straight, you long for curls. It's rarely the right length or color. If your hair doesn't cooperate during a day, you feel a bit insecure and hope you don't see anyone you know that day. I know you all know what I'm talking about. Why, hair, why do you betray me?? Why can't you be perfect every day without an hour's worth of frustrating work?

I've often longed for world-wide baldness so I didn't have to mess with my crazy locks. But then I realized we'd all be into head makeup and danged if that wouldn't be hard to do in the back! So, hair it is. Rapunzel knew the value of hair and how it completely transforms a look and makes the difference between ugly, passable and Oscar-worthy. And by virtue of the mirror, we all get it too.

What is it that has caused all this hair anguish? Well, crazy hair, of course. I have hair that is wavy/curly but doesn't follow a uniform pattern over my head and it's kind of "in-between". It's not curly enough to wear it curly all the time, and not straight enough to wear it straight without a whole lot of effort. I have recently found out I'm approaching the curls all wrong, but that's a lesson for another time because....THIS post is not supposed to be a rant about my hair, it's to tell you about the KeraStraight Treatment being offered now at Ulta Salons.

I have hair that is curly starting about two inches from the crown; curlier on one side than the other.  I feel it never matches itself when I wear it curly and like it's not curly enough to look good that way.  So my answer is to straighten it.  However, if you have curly hair, you know what happens when you take a blow dryer to it.  It looks like this after, (minus the extra face):

Curly hair gets puffy and grows the more you try to dry it.  Once you have this mess, it's time to take a straight iron to it and it takes fuuuuuurever to straighten the aerated curls.  The whole process from shampoo to almost but not quite flat takes me about three or four hours.  Yeah, not kidding.  Hair is not my forte and if you know me in real life, you've probably often heard me say, "hair is the bane of my existence".

Ulta is currently offering some straightening processes to consider of different levels.  I decided I'd had it with the fight of my life every time I took a shower and proceeded to book the KeraStraight Treatment, which promises to reduce frizz and curl for up to 14 weeks, and it is safe for colored hair.  It is currently offered for $159.00 and there is an extra $20 per extra vial of goo used.  If you have very long or very thick hair, it will take extra goo.

I'd rather not talk about the first time I had it done, but it's part of the story and I need to tell you how totally fabulous Ulta is in regards to their customer service.  The first time, I went to a salon and was booked with someone who had never done the process before, nor had she attended any training for it.  Yeah, I was pretty horrified.  My hair didn't all fall out, but it hadn't been done right at all.

I had the same amount of curl, but it was less frizzy and easier for me to straighten it.  The whole process with that lady was horrifying and physically destructive and I wasn't happy.

Ulta Customer Service was really great to talk to and investigated the incident and offered to do the process correctly.  What a completely different experience I had the next time!!! The babe who did my hair was delightful!  She was very friendly and the regional trainer so she absolutely knew her stuff.  I learned things about the treatment that I hadn't been taught before and she did it with all the proper lengths of waiting in between steps, and I have to say, I'm pretty happy with my hair.  *cue singing angels*

There are a few things to know about the process.  First of all, there are no "hydes" of any kind used in this process.  If you have very curly hair, it won't come out completely straight, but the curls will be relaxed and much easier to manage, particularly if you want to wear your hair straight.  Also, don't color for five days before or after.  Because the KeraStraight Treatment is a chemical process put on your hair, it will lift your color some, as it did mine.  The sun or your next color application will bring it back to where you want it, but I don't think the change was so drastic for me that I couldn't live with it and easily fixable if I decided I couldn't.

Also, you need to use a shampoo and conditioner with no sulfates to extend the life of the treatment on your hair.  The less you shampoo it, the longer the process lasts.  That's fabulous for me because I have just about zero oil on my head so I can go months without shampooing.  I wouldn't, of course, but I bet I could make it a good three weeks, if I had to...like during the Zombie Apocalypse or something.  :)

The other thing I'd like to tell you about it is that the first couple of times you wash your hair, it's going to smell a little funky.  It doesn't last.  Once you put your products on it and/or it dries, the smell goes away but it only lasts a couple of shampoos which I find a good exchange for a more manageable mop.

I don't have a good before picture...I'd fallen on the ice in December and wrecked my shoulder and had embarassing hair till I had my hair fixed by Nikki at Ulta, but I can show you how it looked after she did it.

Say hi to Kelly!!  Hey Kels, you made the blog again!!  woot!!  woot!!!

I just want to say that everyone I spoke with at Ulta was very very nice, even at the corporate level.  They couldn't have been more understanding and helpful and I thank them for turning this whole experience around for me and giving me hair that I can be proud of.  I tell you the truth, in 14 weeks or so, I will return to have it redone.  It makes such a difference in ease of drying and straightening.  Thank you, Ulta!!!

I'd love to hear if you've tried this or any of the other salon services at Ulta, and I'd also like to enccourage you if you're curious but on the fence about trying it to give it ago.  It is really, really worth it!!

  1. I am so so so so glad I read this. This is totally a process I would try (extremely frizzy stereo-typical Italian girl hair over here) and now I know to ask if they've done it before and been trained. If I wanted someone who was new I'd go to a Vo Tech training facility and not a salon.
Your hair looks fab! Are you going to do another pic after 14 weeks?

    1. Wonderful idea, Brooke!!! I do think that I should. It will be interesting to see what happens as it wears off. I didn't even think to ask if it's a thing where it grows out like a perm, or if it just generally wears off the hair. Poke me at 14 weeks and make sure I get pictures wet and dry before my next KeraStraight Treatment at Ulta.

  3. I'm really glad that you got it straightened out. I have my hair straightened and made sure that the woman who did mine was certified. Your review is terrific! I laughed quite a few times.

    1. Thank you, Marcia. Ulta has been the best company I've worked with to date, hands down, when it comes to customer service!!! And even with their social media, they have been kind and concerned and more than fair.

  4. thanks, doll! you know then there would be makeup artists and "back-o-the-head makeup artists". The skin texture is all different. Can you imagine using a regular eyeshadow on the back of your head and not knowing if there was fallout? Oh, the horror!!!

  5. I have also had my hair straightened at Ulta by stylist who is certified. It is fabulous.Since you don't have oil in your hair, I will give a side of the story by someone who does. I have to wash my hair every other day because it is oily. After you have the process done on your hair you aren't allowed to get it wet for 3 days. If you do get some of it wet, you have to dry and straighten it immediately. For me, by the 3rd day, I couldn't wait to wash my hair because of it feeling so oily. That is the only bad thing I have to say. I washed my hair and it dried so much faster than it did normally. It also straightened quicker, softer and looked so wonderful. I do agree that Ulta is fantastic. I am so glad they have more than one salon. I still use the non-sulfate conditioner and have to use so little, it lasted a year. I have had the straightening done twice in a year. I love it!

    1. Oh D, that reminds me of something I wanted to mention. I saw a blogger do a review of a Keratin based dry shampoo. It seems like something like that would be great to use in that case. I'd link the review but I don't remember where I read it. Google search would do in place of a brain. :)

They didn't tell me that there was a three day wait to get it wet. Not with KeraStraight, anyway, and they mentioned that one of the great things about this process is that there are no such requirements. I was told that they used to use a straightening process that was like that where you can't even get it rained on or you have to rush to fix it. Thank goodness for this new process.

  7. I'm getting this done on Saturday. Do they wash your hair immediatly after or do you have to have the product in for 48 hours before you can wash?

    1. They wash it after, dry it and flat iron it. Off you go with shiny hair.

  8. does the Kerastraight treatment fix split ends? and if you dont blow dry your hair when you get out of the shower will it just curl?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It does seem to fix split ends. I don't know if it melded them back together or strengthened the ends, but I've had a lot, and I mean a lot fewer splits. That let's me go months between trims. My hair has gotten really long. And, if you don't blow dry after the shower, it dries with nice waves. The amount of wave you have after depends on how curly you were before. My waves are manageable, instead of ratty and pouch like before. I have a post from May or April that shows what it looks like air dried, but it's several months after treatment. Before the treat, net, my hair would tie itself in knots, and it doesn't do that since I've had treatments. It dries quicker and isn't frizzy air dried like before.

    1. You should do it!!! It's actually good for the hair!! My hair has had less breakage and has grown longer than it has in 100 years since I've been doing this. It's so much healthier. Just make sure not to color five days before or five days after.

  10. I have had the process done three times at Ulta...and I LOVE it! I have Dee Snyder (Twisted Sister) hair and when I flat iron it, my hair is perfectly straight! My curls have softened, too. Love, love, love it!

I also color my hair and is fine. I FINALLY have the Laurie Partridge hair I dreamed about!

Did I mention how much I LOVE Kerasraight?

  11. so i just got my hair kerastraight it look great but it feel so stiff and hard. is my hair going to feel softer and smoother after my first wash?

    1. I sure hope so. Did she use hair spray and stuff? It shouldn't be stiff and hard but it could be some goop is left in there. Try washing it in a day and see how it does. It should be much softer after you wash, but when it's wet, it will smell like wet hay for a month or so.

  12. I just got the Kerastraight treatment done today. I'm pretty sure there must still be some of the treatment left in my hair. It feels rough. It's not nearly as soft as it is after I blow it out regularly. Hopefully after a wash it will be soft again. I will be super disappointed if it stays this way. Yuck.

  13. Does it work on African American hair? I'm sort of scared to try it.

    1. Yes. I've seen it used on African American hair. Make sure the person you choose has experience and ask a lot of questions so you'll feel comfortable with it.

  14. Hi, thank you for this review, very helpful! I was wondering, did your hair become drier after it washed out? I know that it says it's good for the hair and shouldn't damage the hair, but I've heard some people say that after it all washed out their hair was left a little more dry than before the treatment. Did this happen to you?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not at all! I had the opposite experience. My hair is naturally coarse and dry. Part of my I'm having a bad hair life.

It is curly and the coarseness tangles it into knots about from the ears back. It kind of rats itself up and combing it out causes hair breakage and knots. I get so mad!!!!!

KeraStraight left my hair silky and I didn't have to fuss with knotting OR and of my lifelong coarse texture.

BUT HERE'S WHAT I THINK IS KEY; you really need to use sulfate free hair products and if they contain keratin, even better. Taking proper care of the hair after the procedure is just so important. I had flat out purchased the products made for ZKersStraight..

I wish we had Ulta in Alaska. Out of the three types of these processes that I've had done, I prefer this by far. It is more healing, more conditioning, healed the dryness and horrible splits i used to get just from combing my hair! And, BY FAR, had lasted much long than the other two processes I've done in my home state.

  15. Warning. . I had this treatment done at Ultra and my hair broke off to the point where I need to have it all cut off. My hsir went 20 inches in the crown to 1/2 inch. The stylist has never apologized. Ulta did give me my money back and affered one deep conditioning treatment. I have had to wear wigs and weaves. It is costing me a fortune to nurse my hair back to heslth.

  16. As an Ulta Hair Stylist myself I would like to give you all some more valuable info. I have been a stylist for 17 years and with Ulta for 2.5 years. Ulta has a level system in the salon. Designer 1's are brand new to Ulta and usually have the least experience with Ulta products and services. The next level is Designer 2 in which the prices go up from D1 about $5 per service and $10 on KeraStraight. D2' s are more experienced and have more training. Sr. Designers (this is my level) have been to more training and have settled into the Ulta Way. We know how to perform all of the services and can set expectations for said services. There are also Master 1 & 2 Stylists. At Ulta we have 2 big training classes per year and several mini sessions during our salon mtgs. All designed to improve the quality of our services. Before you make any big hair decisions you should check out Ulta.com and go to the salon section. It will describe all the services and what the levels are. You can also put in your zip code and go to the section labelled "book appointment now" and when you choose a service you should also see a list of stylists. The higher the price the higher the level of stylist. Hope this was helpful. If you live near Nashville, TN I work in the Glenbrook Shopping Centre Ulta.

  17. It's me again, Sr. Stylist at Ulta, Dawn. KeraStraight is a protein bonding system that smoothes coarse hair. The process will bond Protein to the hair during the heat applications. This not only strengthens the hair but smoothes out the hair shaft for improved manageability. It should not be sold as a straightening service like a permanent straightener. It was designed to smooth and relax difficult hair without the brutal damage of chemical straightening products such as Affirm. To know how much damage permanent straighteners do talk to any of the thousands of African Americans that have gone back to natural hair. They know it's harsh. But KeraStraight washes out with each use. Not a grow out process like a perm. It is important to use the recommended KeraStraight shampoo and conditioner because it not just sulfate free but also sodium chloride free. Salt is KeraStraight' s enemy. So if you will follow your Ulta Designers advice and buy the recommended shampoo & conditioner your service will last even better.

  19. Hi Dawn:) I have read mixed reviews on what the required wait time is after getting the treatment to wash your hair is. I've read you can wash it immediately on here and the girl who did my hair said 72 hours :/ Can you please help? I'm guessing my lady was new because we didn't talk about what shampoo and conditioner to use at all. I have super oily hair I normally shampoo and condition it once a day so this waiting is making me nuts. Plus my hair is thin and after the treatment my husband said it looked like I came back with half my hair. Lol. Hoping once I wash and style it, it would look as flat. Thanks for all the info you've posted as well! I love Ulta!!!
