New Series: The Grey Wave

When I was a kid, I lived in a very harsh climate and in that land, there weren't a lot of older people, like in most communities.  As folks became middle aged, they'd move "outside" as Alaskans call it, to enjoy more moderate winters.  With them went much of the wisdom of older people and generational sharing that would otherwise naturally occur.  In a state with a relatively young population, you'll always find someone who can plow your driveway in winter, but you might not have someone there who will tell you about things that happen physically when you become "of a certain age".

In the beauty industry, I see the populace of my childhood duplicated leaving out the benefit of the wisdom, knowledge and visual perception of older people.  Have you noticed that "anti-aging" ads are filled with young 20 somethings who are years away from needing those products?  I enjoy looking at unlined faces, perfectly shiny hair, and the slender bods of youth, but I also understand that this is doing first world residents a disservice by ignoring some of the natural occurrences of aging, in both the positive and negative.

Let's face it, we are all getting older and blessed to be doing so.  In our society, women especially are encouraged to hide our age with products like hair dye, Botox, lip injections, etc.  I'm not knocking those things whatsoever and I encourage anyone who wants to do them.  (I don't color my hair, pink is my natural color, lol)  It is a personal choice and I'm ok with that.  What bothers me is the pressure to do these things to avoid looking a person's age.  What's wrong with aging?  I want to live to be as old as possible, don't you?

My personal experiences, frustrations and triumphs have been discussed at length, along with media perceptions of aging, in my blog partner and my pool time blog strategy sessions.  He was the brainchild behind this new series so let me tell you what we envision, via my youtube video that launched last week.

To summarize, were you aware that Grey Wavers, (a group I consider to be over say approaching 40 and over) are the largest beauty buying block in the industry?   We spend the most money on beauty products.  We generally have a little more expendable income as well as more creative ways to obtain it. It's a huge monetary mistake for brands to overlook us because they think we're too old to enjoy cosmetics.   And for the first time in history, older people are enjoying makeup as a hobby.  It used to be a utilitarian way to look undead at work.  Now we enjoy the opportunity that different looks and colors offer in our expressions of ourselves.  For the first time in history, you have people over 40 making beauty youtube videos!!  For the first time in history, people are trying to encompass what aging means in terms of beauty and navigate the obstacles and help you to do the same when you find yourself there.

I'd like to invite other youtubers and bloggers to join with me and let's talk about the things that happen.  Like the 80s and our eyebrows that didn't grow back.   Let's talk about how your brows fall out and the trouble with eyeliner as you age.  Let's bring these things to the forefront and navigate them for our public.  This is a completely new genre...older beauty collectors and users.

My tag line is It's Not Your Mama's Makeup, and it's not.  Your mama didn't wear a full beat to pick up kids at school, (and actually you had to walk to and from school anyway).  Your mama had one eyeshadow that was her color, and certainly didn't have half a dresser full.   Your mama didn't know what retinol is.  All these things are brand new for The Grey Wavers.  We are the Grey Wave experts because we are the only ones to have ever been here.  Except Baddie Winkie.  I bet she could tell us a thing or two.

And none of this whatsoever is to say that if you're not older, you have no beauty value.  I have so many friends and favorites among bloggers and youtubers that are younger and they are smart cookies!!  They know their stuff and are fortunate not to have to deal with wrinkling yet.  When the current crop of  youTubers, if they stick around for 10 more years, they will become the aging beauty experts.  I can't wait to see it!   I'm curious to see where this route takes my friends and colleagues.

So let's all plan to get older and share our beauty challenges and the times we conquer the terrain of a changing face and body.

As I leave, I'd like to share with you some of my favorite peole who are part of The Grey Wave...I hope no one is offended by that moniker.  My hubs found my first grey hair when I was 23...how does it happen so fast?  If I forget to list some faves, please forgive me and list yours below.

The Fabzilla - Kath has a series where she's interviewed bloggers over 40 for their secrets and knowledge

Norah Loves Makeup - Norah is an exceptional working makeup artist and blogger

Beauty Junkies Unite - I've been reading Amber's blog forever.  Don't miss it

Makeup Obsessed Mom - Stacie also has a youTube channel that I enjoy.

Notes From My Dressing Table - Erika is like my brother from another mother, only she's not a dude!  She is my neighbor, sorta, my friend, and a daily read.

Who have I left out?  I'm paranoid that my Grey Waver's brain is forgetting some!!  Let me know and also please let me know if you especially have makeup tips for the vast terrain challenges of The Grey Wave.

You'll Want Pre Heels For The Best Feet Of Your Life

One of the companies I met with while attending Cosmoprof North America in 2017 was Pre Heels, a spray-on anti-friction flexible barrier designed to save your feet from blisters.  Dana Ward, the founder and owner of Pre Heels was so much fun!!!  Sometimes when you meet with a brand in person, you connect with the product or the owner, and in this case, both.  We just adored Dana, (sympatico!), and couldn't wait to give this new product a try.

flexible friction blister barrier feet spray

Pre Heels is a unique aerosol spray that is used for all the rub spots you might have in your shoes.  It flexes with your foot without breaking and is durable all day while it gives protection from pain and blister inducing rubbing.  It is a clear spray so if you have opened toed shoes, it won't show, but don't spray it on your pedicure or it will dull the shine while it's on.

Usually I carry a ton of bandaids when I wear boots or shoes for long periods of time but Pre Heels has been all I need for foot comfort.  I've been really impressed from the first time I tried it.  My feet have their little troubles from wearing small shoes as a child, so when I'm somewhere that I'll be walking for a long time, such as a large trade show like CPNA, I will bandaid up my feet and still get blisters.  Dana has saved my feet with Pre Heels!!  And it's so comfortable.

Just spray it on your tender spots, wait 45 seconds and spray a second time, if you like.  Pre Heels won't rub off in your shoes.  To remove it, lightly scrub your feet in the bath or shower.  It takes just a little effort to rub it off of your feet.  I'm impressed with the safe barrier it gives my feet in shoes and I'm impressed that it lasts until I decide to remove it.  Hubs has used this on his shoulders while hauling my heavy bags of stuff around CPNA and when we go for photo shoots with the same success.

This is a truly amazing product that your feet won't want to be without.  It's available in the 1.5 oz size that I have which fits easily into your bag for just $14.99 and the larger 2.5 oz for $22.99.  Your feet will tell you it's a bargain at any price.  You'll seriously want to enter all the dance contests you can once you have this product!

Ingredients:
  1. Dimethyl Ether: propellant that enables the formulation to be sprayed evenly in a mist. This is an organic compound and common aerosol propellant that does not harm the ozone.
  2. Mixed Acetate Solvents: liquids designed to evaporate quickly to leave the protective barrier on your skin. All of these have been shown to be completely safe over decades of use in consumer nail polishes.
  3. Acrylate copolymers: safe, plastic-like particles that sit on the skin and bond together once dry to form a barrier. These are also used in nail polishes and other common coatings.
  4. Non-pthalate plasticizer: helps make the barrier flexible so that it can move and flex with your skin. This ingredient is even approved for use with food contact.
  5. Siloxanes: allows the barrier to feel soft and smooth on your skin. This is a common smoothing agent used in deodorants, hair sprays & facial moisturizing creams.

You can learn more about Pre Heels on their website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest.   Pre Heels is also available on HSN.com.  Trust me on this, you'll enjoy having happy feet.  My feet never smiled at me before I met Dana Ward and Pre Heels.

How about you?  Do your dogs bark like pained little puffers when you spend hours on your feet?  Are your feet leaving you messages all over social media that they'd like to try Pre Heels?

Four Hottest Eyeshadow Palettes for Fall 2017 - Huda, Kat Von D, Nyx, Too Faced

This week on my youtube channel, I tackled four of the hottest most hyped eyeshadow palettes that have come out this fall.  I know you've all heard about the Huda Beauty Desert Dusk palette, and perhaps you've heard of the Kat Von D Saint and Sinner palette as well.  I don't think there's a corner of the makeup world that isn't curious about the Too Faced Just Peachy Mattes palette, and I know the NYX Professional Makeup Sugar High caused quite a stir when we first spied it at Cosmoprof North America this year.  I've chosen to swatch and review these highly hyped eyeshadow palettes and tell you my thoughts, from my point of view and my skintone, and hopefully help you to decide for yourself if they will work for you.

**Find the first three here:  http://go.magik.ly/ml/6zp8/
The Nyx Sugar High can be found here:  http://go.magik.ly/ml/6zpa/

I'm really curious to hear your thoughts as well.  Have you purchased any?  Have you seen or swatched them in the store?  What are you most looking forward to seeing this fall?
