THE MAKEUP SHOW LA TREND REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2018

(Kevin James Bennett teaching. Credit: The Makeup Show)

For the second year, the team at Polarbelle HQ attended The Makeup Show LA in the first week of November. It was an incredible wealth of teaching and learning opportunities, artisan workshops and beauty shopping.  I'm always so incredibly inspired spending time with such talented and knowledgeable artists. I think TMS does it best by bringing top industry professionals who genuinely want to share their experience and knowledge with others in the same career field.  You just don't find that everywhere.  I love the generosity with which the speakers share triumphs, pitfalls and tips for success.  It's one of the best experiences an artist can have, in my opinion.

I have a post show wrap-up today for your reading pleasure.  We were fortunate to be able to hear The Makeup Show's Artist Director James Vincent talk about these trends in person.  They were further and forever stamped in my mind as I listened to famed celebrity makeup artists Pati Dubroff and Sarah Tanno, who iterated many of the same points.  For instance, they both said that skin is in and that when doing print work, photographers hate if you apply foundation to the subject.  I've never worked in print beyond this blog so I had no idea.  I was surprised!  My objective on the blog is cover it all up at all costs....right?  And in the instagram makeup world, people apply a ton of makeup and photoshop it all, giving you the idea that you have to wear 15 layers of product to fit in.  Not in the world of the actual working makeup artist.

Skin is making itself known, and if you follow Jordan Liberty, (on of my favorite speakers at TMS), on Instagram, you'll know his style focuses on skin.  The idea that less is more and skin is in made a huge impression on me.  I'm glad to see it and hope it lands on Instagram more often in the near future.  I often think kids have been given a bad impression on social media of how to wear makeup if they've come of age in the era of Insta-makeup.

You might like to see a video I have from a new brand to the show Petite N Pretty after you read more about the show and the trends found.    Safe real makeup for kids is a new trend that I think you'll see more of in the consumer market.  Also, I have a video I launched recently covering some of the things I heard and saw at the show, as well as the carefully thought out purchases that I made.  I hope you'll enjoy it.  There's some cute stuff in there!!  I'll have a blog post covering the second video soon.

But in the meantime, let's have a look at the new trends!!!

THE MAKEUP SHOW LA WRAPS A YEAR OF SHOWS WITH THE 2018 TREND REPORT

Artists mingled at The California Market Center this past weekend to stock their kits with the latest product trends from over 85 brands

Los  Angeles,  CA (November  10 & 11 2018)  -‐ The Makeup Show  LA took place this past  weekend on
November 10th and  11th at The California Market  Center. Professional artists, press,  influencers, and brand
executives joined  together for a weekend full of new debuts  and trending products from brands such as
MAKE  UP FOR EVER, Mehron, Crown Brush, Smith Cosmetics,  Danessa Myricks Beauty, Stila,
Urban Decay...and many  more!

In addition, guests shopped exclusive deals from  over 85 beauty brands, attended a variety of hands-‐on
workshops,  and also had the opportunity to interact one-‐on-‐one with some of  today’s leading celebrity artists
such as Pati Dubroff, Stephanie Nicole,  Jordan Liberty, Sarah Tanno, Damone Roberts, and more! Shelly
Taggar, owner  of The Makeup Show, and James Vincent, the show’s Director of Education and Artist  Relations,
walked the show floor to see what the pros were buying, what was flying  off the shelves, and what was trending
amongst brands. Below we dig into the top trends  that this year’s show revealed:

● CELEBRITY  SKIN: Natural   skin is a must-‐have   for this time of year.   Look to the red carpet, runway
or your favorite fashion magazines and  you will see models and celebrities wearing  makeup that is barely
there with a soft matte  finish. A sheer coverage complexion with strategic  warmth and shine is flattering for
any face. Some of  the more popular products amongst the pro’s included:

○ MAKE  UP FOR EVER  Waterblend -‐  Known for their  light-‐weight, water  gel foundation,
MAKE UP FOR EVER created a line  for the perfect dewy glow.
○ Alcone  -‐ For additional  hold and perspiration  control try Alcone anti-‐shine  and sweat products as a primer.

the most   intense heat.
○Veil  Cosmetics  -‐ Their newest  launch, AutoMatte is  the perfect powderless  mattifier and skin smoother.  In

● HIGH  BROW: Social  media has made eyebrows  strong and exaggerated for  the last few years and this  season
we see a runway and red  carpet that reacts to that. The brow  is a fuller, denser eyebrow that goes to  the light
or medium tone of the hair. It's  another shape that shows skin and dimension but  still has beautiful presence.
Use a brow pencil to   provide volume. The wax of the pencil sits on top of  the skin and can make a flat brow
feel fuller.
○ Kevyn  Aucoin The  Brow Pencil -‐  Used for the perfect  fill. This product adds  depth and dimension.
○ Crown  Brush Brow  Palette -‐ Used  by makeup artist and  consumers that want beautiful  brows on a budget
and comes in  a wide color range.
○ Damone   Roberts Brow   Gel -‐ Known   for helping shape   and color, Damone Roberts   brand
represents the perfect  brow every time.
○ Benefit  Cosmetics Brow  Gel -‐ One of  the most popular brow  brands of all time, Benefit  Cosmetics has

season. All over eyeshadow,  a bold swipe of eyeliner or a bit  of brightly colored mascara, are all easy  ways
to take the trend to your everyday.
○ Danessa  Myricks Color  Fix -‐ This long  wear pro favorite that  can be used as cream shadow,  liner, mascara
or lip color.

● I  LOVE ROCK  N ROLL: Traditional  cat eyes are a bit blockier  this season; you can also try  a sexy smudged
cat eye for an  unforgettable modern look. Neo Graphic  Liner is an easy and sexy choice -‐-‐  Pair a bold black
liner with any lip, from   barely there to a daring red, it will always work.  We saw many pro’s adding these
products to their kits:

  5. I love that skin is in.....but it doesn't help when you have uneven coloration and dark circles, not to mention the occasional breakout. I've been trying to find a good balance between bare face and full coverage.
