6 Ways To Play Beautifully With Elf Cosmetics - Beauty Squad Report

I'm so proud to be a member of the e.l.f. Cosmetics Beauty Squad, bringing to you my unbiased opinion about the products.  e.l.f. stands for eyes.lips.face, and from here on, I'll be referring to it as Elf, just for ease of writing.   It is a cruelty-free company.  When I was chosen as a member, I discovered that my cousins are Elf-a-holics.  So we dished some about the products, why they've gone "all Elf all the time" and what their favorite products are.

Today I'm bringing to you an assortment of five products from Elf Cosmetics, with my honest review of them.

Elf shadow stick, lip balm, matte lip pencil, review, samples

I'm pretty excited about these items.  The quality of Elf is on par with Mac Cosmetics and most other upper end brands that you can think of.  These are now among my favorite items and I'll tell you why.

The Tantalizing Taupe eyeshadow quad, (.014 oz / $3.00), is just beautiful!!!  The kind of taupey browns that take your breath away.  And at just $3, it is a steal and there's not a lot of financial risk involved to check it out. I have two pictures of the quad; one outside and one with the sun shining right on it.  You can see the personality of the shades in the base color and then how the shimmers shine in the light.

So pretty!!  The shadows apply with ease and have great blendability.  I love brushes so I use those in my makeup application rather than the sponge brush which I used for the swatches.  The bottom shade is a matte and applies as smoothly as the shimmers.  These wear ALL DAY for me, without any creasing, flaking, drifting or fall-out.  I'm SO impressed with the quality of the shades.  The pigmentation is superb.

I can't get over how smooth and creamy the shadows are.  I've worn this palette more than any other that I have since I got it.  It will easily take you from day to nighttime, classic to smoky.  Seriously.  I mean, SERIOUSLY!!

This is an easy everyday look I did using the Tantalizing Taupe quad.  (Don't mind the messy curly hair.  I'm experimenting with this new cut.)

The next product I'd like to tell you about is the e.l.f. Perfect Finish HD Powder, ($6 / .028 oz).

There are a few things you should know as I review this powder.  I have tried most of the HD powders on the market.  HD stands for high definition and is a finer mill of product in order to translate well on television.  The other thing you should know is I have never found a powder I liked for my dry skin, and I've spent a lot of money searching.  So you can imagine I thought the powder would be a pass for me since I have years of non-powder experience.

I love this powder so much!  I really, really do.  It is a very finely milled lightweight powder.  It gives such a light and smooth finish that it makes me look more polished but without dry spots or "white powder hangover" anywhere.  This is huge to me.  The other powders I've used over the years always felt heavy and like they screamed "she's really dry" to me.  Get this powder.  Just get it!!  Used with a fat fluffy brush, this is something that I now use every day in my makeup routine.  I can't emphasize enough that this powder is so wonderful that I actually use it.  <<<<---- this from a former non-powder person.

The powder comes in a two part compact with a mirror and powder in the top side and a sponge applicator on the bottom.  It's complexion perfection.

Elf sent two lip products; a Studio Matte lip color in the color Wine, a lip balm stick and a shadow/liner duo pencil.

The Elf Studio Matte lip color in Wine, ($3), is a large size twist up lip color that never needs to be sharpened.  However, is does have a sharpener in the end if you want to use it as a liner.  It provides a pigmented long lasting color and is enriched with vitamins A, C, E, for hydration.  It lasts very well and is a nice merlot type of color; a red that is wearable any time of day.

In the picture above, you see the matte lipstick on the left and the Elf Lip Balm, ($3), on the right, in the color Pink.  This is such a great pink!!!  It gives a nice plump color and has SPF 15 to protect your lips from the sun's rays.  My lips burn really easily and most balms don't give enough color for me but this is one I can wear while running around outside and still feel pretty.

The third stick for review today is Elf Studio Eyeliner and Shadow Stick, ($3), in the color Black/Smoke.  It's also a wonderful item from Elf.  You have a soft gel liner on one side and a cream shadow on the other.  Both twist up and never need to be sharpened.  They have light reflecting pigments as you'll see in my swatches that reflect in a way to give fullness on the eye.  It creates interest as you easily craft a business-like or smoky eye.

I've worn this shadow/liner stick and it, too, lasted all day for me.  I regret that I don't have pictures for you.  I thought I did, but there's nothing on any of my cameras.  I had no creasing and found the gel liner easy to wing.  No creasing!!!  I do wear a concealer on the lids so I recommend some kind of primer, but this honestly just goes no where after you've applied it.

Swatches:

Do you see how with different lighting, at different angles, the properties of the shadow stick come out?  You won't have a dull one colored lid with these.  I just love, love, love the juicy look of the balm.  Isn't it such a pretty pink?!?!?!

Here again we have the shadow quad in use.  And, again, with the natural hair.  Another story all in itself, lol.

So here are some deets about Elf.  They have the best sales!!!  And regularly.  We're talking every week, so you HAVE to sign up to receive the emails from their website for notification.  They had a dollar sale a few weeks ago and I was able to get a ton of stuff, like eyeshadow quads!!, for just a dollar each!!!   They are also sold at Target in-store and online.  Elf has a ton of tools, BRUSHESSSSS, and new products coming out all the time.  I'm pretty excited for all the holiday stuff!

And, most exciting of all, they have started a subscription box called Play Beautifully.   There are a variety of different subscription plans so be sure to read about them and think about which exciting box of surprises you'd like to receive.  Really, go read about it!!!

Be sure to follow Elf on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram.  And check out their hashtag #playbeautifully.

I'm going to leave you with my "sultry" face and ask you to share with me your favorite Elf products.

What have you tried from Elf?  What have you loved?  I'd love to hear your experience!

Let's Talk Turkey About Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It's a peaceful time of love and family where we can relax and enjoy each other and be thankful for having each other in our lives. I love that feeling more than anything.

But THIS YEAR....(and this is not to minimize the warmth of the holiday, I just have a different post in mind today)....we are going to go play Black Friday!!! And boy are there a lot of things to consider!

Wal Mart will be open all day, but that's boring. Give me a line of people all cheery and laughing about how stupid we are while sipping a hot mocha over stores open all day anytime!!! We're starting at Target at 9 pm. While some run to the electronics section, I'm stopping into the cosmetics aisle as I've been lured by some beautiful pictures of intrigue.

Pixi has some interesting holiday offerings.  The first kit runs $34 USD.  I haven't used their eyeshadows or blushes yet, but I imagine they're good.  The things I have used from the line are nice so I really want to look at this.

I LOVE Pixi nail polish.  They usually retail for $9-10 each so three polishes for $12 is a great deal and these look awesome to me.

The Lid Last Shadow Pen Duo retails for $12.  I have the pen on the left and it makes an awesome shadow base or is great alone with a liner.  Love it!!
Burt's Bees...who doesn't love Burt's Bees?  This year there are some great holiday sets to consider.  The Burt's Bees Favorites set is just $19.99

And look at this block of nail polish from Elf.  Dying to try this.  It's only $10!!

Elf also has two large eyeshadow palettes containing all the palettes you could possibly want.  I haven't tried their shadows yet, have you?  The palettes are just $15 each!

Awesome, right?  Right.  After Target, I'd like to head to Ulta.  They have a two page doorbuster flyer online right now but they haven't released all their in store specials yet, so I'll amuse myself in the meantime by shopping online.  There is a plethora of online deals to choose from!!!

Beginning this morning, Inglot Cosmetics has a 20% off sale.  I'll be shopping there.

If you look at the Affiliate ads on my sidebar, (they go live on Friday), you'll see that Nordstrom is having a buy 2, get one polish free special for Black Friday.  They have other cosmetics specials as well, so once Friday hits, click thru my ad, if you don't mind, and it will help sustain my website as you shop.  You'll find all kinds of deals.  Cyber Monday brings many more and on Monday, I'll have new ads.  Order online Monday and receive 10 pts per dollar on your Nordstrom Rewards card.  Counting down the hours....

Billion Dollar Brows, a brand I'll be reviewing for you soon, has a special this Black Friday, of 70% off their 3 Steps To Beautiful Brows Kit.  It retails for $85 and you can purchase it for $25.50 with the code BDBBLACKFRI.  This code is good from 11/22/12 to 11/26/12 11:59 PST.  I have this kit.  It's really nice.  It contains a brow pencil, brow gel and brow serum.

After I have some turkey tomorrow, I'll come back with more special savings.  That way, the special banners will be active, or closer to it, and the post won't be so long you can't stand it.  :)

What are your Thanksgiving plans and do you have any Black Friday madness in store, or how about Cyber Monday?

Thanksgiving Week in Review on YouTube

You guys know I have a youtube channel, right?  I'm trying to align the channel and my blog better but I totally failed over the past week.  So I'm going to catch you up right here.

I posted my haul from the Muse Beauty Pro booth at The Makeup Show.  Girl....girl....girl!!  I had a lot of items in mind to purchase there and a couple that I hadn't anticipated.  You'll see a first look at the Viseart Grande Pro palette here.  I included swatches but my review hasn't gone up yet as I've been playing with every color to give you a full analysis.  I'll tell you right now, this will be one of my favorites from 2017.

You can see what I got in my Sephora Play box for November and whether I liked it or not.

I have some Laura Geller items that you definitely want to check out for holiday gift giving.  I've also done a Get Ready With Me with their 20 year celebration palette.  There is a giveaway of a triple highlighting palette at the end, which closes 11/30 at midnight.

Speaking of gift giving, you'll  want to consider The Vintage Cosmetics Company.  Their products have retro packaging and they're so cute!!!  They are also good quality at a low price.  You can find them at Ulta, TJ Maxx and Marshall's.  So cute!

And, I've started doing a little Vlogmas!  There are two videos so far and I honestly have no idea what I'm doing in vlogs, but what the heck....I get a little holly jolly during the holidays and love to spread the joy.

I hope you'll find something interesting for you in the videos.  It's such a busy time!!  Again I really apologize that I didn't keep you up to date during Thanksgiving.  I know everyone must have been as busy as I was, and I took a lot of family time over the week.  But I didn't forget you guys!!  I promise.

I'd like to do a Cyber Weekend haul for you and finish my picks from The Makeup Show...and make shopping lists, a little skincare, a little bath and body and a whole lot of makeup...where's an elf when you need a helper!?!  If you have anything you'd like to see first, please don't hesitate to let me know!

Osmosis Colour Pressed Base Mineral Foundation and Curling Mascara - My Reviews...and More

In the picture below, we have a rare creature among beauty lovers and bloggers and it's called "pan".  Those of us who love to collect rarely see the elusive pan.  Bloggers and makeup mavens alike tend to gather so many products that it seems like we rarely use any to completion.  When a powder or cream product is truly loved, the first signs are many pictures on social media followed by the appearance of  "pan".  The act of revealing the bottom of  a product is referred to as "hitting pan".   Please pause to admire my feelings about the Osmosis Colour Pressed Mineral Base in the color Beige Light, (pictured with the e.l.f. cosmetice kabuki brush).

I'm going to tell you more about the Pressed Base but first, let's have a little chat about the Curling Mascara, ($22).   You might have noticed that both items are housed in metallic brown plum.  It so sleek and pretty.  I really appreciate the pieces for their asthetic as well as performance.

The curling mascara has a curved anti-gravity brush that will transform your normal lashes into fanned out, naturally looking curly lashes.

From the website:
"The spiral layers coat every lash for buildable volume, while the innovative cobra-shaped head provides major curl for full, astonishing lashes.

One of the ingredients for your lashes in this mascara is ProVitamin B5 which coats each lash and increases fullness, length and volume while moisturizing.  This is a long wearing waterproof formula and yet comes off easily as you remove your makeup.  It is my FAVORITE mascara.

I said favorite.  Yes, I did.  Below you see an unretouched picture of one coat of the non-flaking mascara.  I have one little spot below my lower lid where I popped myself in the eye, lol.  But I assure you that this mascara doesn't flake or have any fallout as it lasts all day.  (You'll see in a minute how delightful I look without this mascara.)

I'm going to tell you upfront that the Osmosis Colour Pressed Base Mineral Foundation is the best powder foundation I've ever used.  It isn't powdery but rather gives a nice natural finish when buffed in with a kabuki or whatever brush you'd like to use.  Other powder foundations have made me itch and left my face dry.  I have a gluten related allergy that erupts on my face with exposure and is extremely itchy but this foundation doesn't irritate it at all.  Truly amazing.  I've tried quite a few others and haven't had a lot of success.   My color is Beige Light, which is perfect for me.

I have compared swatches to the Mac Studio Fix and Mineralized Finishing Powders that I've tried in the past.  You should note that I've never finished one of those but I will finish this one.  From left to right:
1) Mac Studio Fix N4, which is the closest match to my Osmosis Colour Beige Light.
2)  Mac Mineralized Medium
3)  Osmosis Colour Pressed Base Mineral Foundation in Beige Light
4)  A different formula of Mac Mineralized Medium Natural plus Shimmer, which matches with the other Mac Medium
5)  Mac NW25 Studio Fix
6)  Mac NW30 Studio Fix

swatches

From the Osmosis website:

"Formulated for all skin types, the Osmosis Colour Pressed Base provides a flawless and seamless, semi-matte finish with long-lasting coverage. Natural broad-spectrum UV protection shields skin from UVA and UVB rays, helping to prevent premature aging and hyperpigmentation. It applies quickly and easily with no mess and is packaged in a stylish mirrored compact.  Gluten-Free"

You can review the list of ingredients for each color at this link.

There are so many reasons that I love this foundation.  It doesn't itch.  It matches well.  It's not dry, nor does it call attention to my naturally dry skin.  I can make my skin glow with a decent buff.  It has great coverage without being heavy.  It doesn't melt and diseappear in the Phoenix heat.  And more.

I recently had a major surgery.  It was a couple of months before I really cared enough about what I looked like to bother with foundation.  The only place I went for the first few months was physical therapy, where I am working very hard to rehab my knee.  When I say very hard, I mean that it's a work out.  I can wear this powder, look ok, hide my celiac skin, and not breakout.  I tried wearing other foundations to even out my skin and the workouts made me break out, but not so with this one.  That's HUGE.  I already have problems with my skin from the gluten allergy, I certainly don't need pimples too!

The first day I wore it, I went to snapchat at night after checking the wear.  I've talked about this a lot on Snap.  All my followers know how I feel about it.

One day I met with a friend who works for a large cosmetic brand that is known for it's glowing skin products.  She told me that my skin looked fantastic and wanted to know what I was using.  I told her and she asked how on earth my skin was glowing with a powder foundation.  RIGHT?  It's counter-intuitive, but I'm telling you, my skin can have a nice healthy glow with this foundation without it being heavy, itchy or making me breakout!!

I'm wearing no mascara in this picture.  No highlighter, no blush, some lip balm and that's it.  I had a gluten exposure before this picture so I have a major outbreak, but with a little color correcter and this pressed base, you'd never know.  It hides all my secrets!!!! It's like a best friend that you can share the worst of yourself with and it will never reveal those things to anyone.  Who wouldn't love that???

Osmosis has so many outstanding products.  I'd really encourage you to check out their website and sign up to get the blog posts delivered to your mailbox.  I've learned a lot of general really helpful information from reading it.  Be sure to follow them on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.  Osmisis Skincare is a cruelty-free, Leaping Bunny certified company.  I think you'll love the skincare and color products.  I know I do!

Have you experienced Osmosis yet?

Easy Black Plum Smokey Eye Tutorial

We're shaking things up here this month at Polarbelle. I've launched a Fight Like A Girl; Fight to Win series and in a few days I'll be bringing you some spooky offerings for Halloween. Today, I've got a guest post for you from another blogger, Sidrah from MakeupMew. And without further adieu, welcome to the show!

Easy as 1-2-3 Black Plum Smokey Eye Tutorial

With fall season in bloom, I love using rich jewel tones for the eyes. Plums and burgundy paired with a rich black smokey effect is perfect for adding dimension to your look. For this tutorial, I’ll be showing you how to create an easy smoky eye look with a pop of bright violet in the crease. The pop of color will create a nice transition from darkness of the black to the brow bone highlight. So take out your makeup goodies and let’s get started!

Step 1: Start off with a primed eyelid to prevent your eyeshadows from creasing. Next, taking a creamy black kohl eyeliner, apply this starting at the outer corner of your eyes and a thick line on your lashline.

Step 2: Taking a small crease brush, smudge out the eyeliner. I tend to use a precision brush since I don’t want the black to be smudged all over. Since the eyeliner is creamy, it will blend out easily. Try not to use waterproof eyeliner since it dries a lot quicker so you will not be able to smudge out the eyeliner evenly.

Step 3: Taking a black eyeshadow, apply this all over the lid. You want to pack on the color on top of the eyeliner to set it. I used one with a tiny bit of shimmer which doesn’t show up so much.

Step 4: Taking a matte violet purple shadow, apply this on the crease of your eye where the black eyeshadow ends. I used the ELF Studio Shadow C brush which is perfect for crease work. Make sure to blend out the eyeshadow and apply a shimmery highlight shade.

Step 5: I wanted to add another pop of color to the inner corner; I used the Stila Smudgepot in Violet with a tiny liner brush. This has more of a blue tone so it really makes the eyes pop.

Step 6: Apply black eyeliner to the upper and lower lashline. Curl your lashes and apply your favourite mascara. For this look I wanted to use some false lashes since my eyes a bit smaller so it needs every bit of oomph as possible!

    Here’s the final look!

I hope you all enjoyed this tutorial! Have you rocked a smokey eye lately? What lip and cheek duo would you pair this look with?
